The School of Law
Outstanding Alumni and Professors Honored
Congratulations to the Hon. Jeanne Buckley (Ret.), Empire Class of 1979, who has been
recognized by the Sonoma County Bar Association with a 2004 Career of Distinction
Award. Commissioner Buckley’s 15 year career as Juvenile Court Commissioner is character-
ized by her colleagues as providing a “sense of hope and work ethic.” Since retiring in 1999,
Commissioner Buckley remains an advocate for the youth of Sonoma County, serving on
two youth-related advisory boards. Additionally, she has been a board member for Chops,
the DeMeo teen center, and oversaw its initial opening. Commissioner
Buckley also sits on the Board of Trustees for Pomona College in
Claremont and frequently serves as a keynote speaker for Empire College
School of Law.
Sonoma County’s newest member of the bench, Hon. Lawrence
Ornell, Empire Class of 1991, was sworn in as a Superior Court Commis-
sioner on June 28, 2004. Commissioner Ornell brings a varied back-
ground to the position including cryptography with the U.S. Marine
Corps, experience as a deputy probation officer, and 12 years as a deputy
district attorney for Sonoma County. In addition, he is an adjunct faculty member at
Santa Rosa Junior College’s Probation Academy. Noted by his colleagues for his ability to
handle a heavy case load and direct people in ways that hold them accountable, thus far
Commissioner Ornell’s assignments have included traffic, criminal misdemeanors, and
juvenile cases.
Professor Rachel Nunes, an attorney with Abbey, Weitzenberg, Warren & Emery, was
recipient of the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce’s Excellence in Education Award at the
university level. As a faculty member at Empire College School of Law since 2000, the
first responsibility Professor Nunes undertook at Empire was the design of the Moot
Court class. Her next challenge was to select and coach her first Empire Moot Court Team and guide
them through the competition held at UCLA Law School in April of 2000. In a stunning achieve-
ment, Professor Nunes’ initial team received the first place award in brief writing and the first place
award for “Excellence in Appellate Advocacy” in this academic decathlon between California law
schools. In each successive year, the Empire team has faced stiff competition and received awards for
their excellence. As one student stated, “Professor Nunes pushed us to be our very best.”

IT Team installs 165 new HP computers
in Empire’s computer labs
Cathy Hamilton, Empire’s network administrator, along with computer
techs Chris Perez and Scott Wilcox have successfully installed 165 new
Hewlett Packard computers in Empire’s five computer labs. The computers
arrived on Thursday, October 21, with installation occurring over the four
weekends since that time. The last lab – Room 218 – was completed during
the wee hours on Monday, November 15.
Congratulations to Cathy, Chris, and Scott...and many thanks to student
volunteers Jerry Domitilli, Joanne Emery, Leon Littler, and Ian Scott;
instructors Christine Bushong, Rob Geidl, and Barb Harland; and Sairah

Medical Office Management students establish scholarship fund, honor
Medical Assistants of the Year
Students in the Medical Office Management class conceptualized a three-day event in conjunction with National
Medical Assistants Week (October 18-22) to recognize practicing medical assistants, generate interest in their career field
among high school students, and raise money to establish a scholarship fund for CCMA certification exam fees. At the
end of Day 3, they had raised an impressive $3000. Highlights of the event were:
Reception Honoring Medical Assistants
On Friday evening, October 22, a reception was held at the
College to honor medical assistants and to recognize two as
Medical Assistants of the Year. Award recipients were:
Jane Barry, Russian River Health Center
Medical Administrative Assistant of the Year
In nominating Jane, Lolly Stafford, RN stated, “Jane is a real
team player. She is cheerful, well informed, cares about patient
care, and is an approachable teacher and mentor for our
medical assistants and front office staff.”
Mari Magill, Primary Care Associates-Cherry Street
Medical Clinical Assistant of the Year
“Mari is always willing to help out with both office staff
and patients. I have seen her cry tears of joy and sorrow with
patients while giving them as much time as they need with her.
We have patients who call on the phone to talk exclusively
with Mari because they trust her advice and judgment,” stated
Judy Dittmer, RN. Mari is a 1994 graduate of Empire’s
Medical Administrative and Clinical Assistant program.
Education Day Silent Auction
The local chapter of the California Medical Assistants
Association held a statewide “Education Day” at Empire
College on Saturday, October 23. Empire students
were instrumental in extending an invitation to
students from Casa Grande High School’s medical
pathways program, and 20 of them attended with
their teacher. In addition, the Empire students held a
silent auction which was well received by CMAA
members.
Student Appreciation Day and Pie-in-the-Face Fun
The new module on Monday, October 25, started
off in a positive fashion for Empire’s medical students
who were greeted with refreshments and gifts (a
lanyard imprinted with the college logo and “National
Medical Assistants Week 2004”). It was capped off at
the end of the day with “Pie-in-the-Face” festivities on
the patio. Many thanks are owed to Empire’s faculty
and staff who volunteered to be targets in support of
the students’ worthy efforts to establish a scholarship
fund:

Empire Hospitality students raise $1650 for Valley of the Moon
Children’sFoundation
Sixteen students in Empire College’s Event Planning class planned, scheduled, and executed a very successful fundraiser
on September 10, 2004, raising $1650 for Valley of the Moon Children’s Foundation. Called Cherishing Sonoma
County – Discovering Our Treasures, the event showcased local hospitality/tourism companies, tested guests’ knowledge of
our county’s hidden treasures in a “Survey Says” game show, and included a responsible hospitality demonstration by a
California Highway Patrol officer.
For the responsible hospitality demonstration, three volunteers were given one-ounce “tastes” (roughly what is served
to winery tourists) throughout the evening. The California Highway Patrol officer periodically checked those volunteers’
alcohol consumption rate with a state-approved breath analyzer, and the scores were
marked down. Volunteers were rewarded with a limousine ride home.

Paralegal Students Participate
in Small Claims
Court Simulation
On October 2, 2004,
Empire’s paralegal students
were invited to participate in a Small
Claims Court simulation event spon-
sored by Recourse Mediation Services.
Held in Superior Courtrooms 20
and 21 on the Empire College
campus, the event allowed students to
test their skill at spotting legal issues
and advocating in a Small Claims
Court role play. Students acting as
plaintiff or defendant and arguing
their cases before the judge were
Colleen Butler, Kaela Felkins,
Melinda Holt, Fran Reilly, and Adam
Steiner. They also had the opportu-
nity to work with mediators to explore
ways to resolve their cases.
The students reported that they
enjoyed the experience, learned about
mediation, and how to prepare for
court. The attorneys who acted as
judge pro tems were very professional
and treated the mock scenarios as true
Small Claims cases. The paralegal
students worked alongside Empire
College law students in their role-
playing as plaintiffs or defendants.
Some students brought props and
added to the scenarios given to them
so that their cases would be more
believable. All agreed that they would
do it again when next offered.
Recourse Mediation will be
conducting another mediation
trainings in six months and has
promised to include Empire students.
LOP Students Go to Court
On September 30, 2004, Legal Office
Procedures students went on a field
trip to Superior Court Department 21
before Hon. Robert Boyd to observe a
trial in progress. It was a contract
dispute, and the class watched the
interrogation of an expert witness
regarding an accounting in dispute.
Department Newsxx
Judge Boyd took 15 minutes
prior to the trial to explain
courtroom procedures and
answer students’ questions.

Job News from an Empire Accounting Grad
Tony Ramos was a manufacturing supervisor for Agilent Technologies for 25 years. After taking a year off from work, he
was hired by Costco where he worked for seven days and determined it was not for him. He knew he wanted to take
some accounting courses and decided he could accomplish his goal in a reasonable timeframe with Empire’s
Bookkeeping with Computer Applications program.
Since being hired in the Accounting Department of CamelBak Products, LLC in September 2003, Tony has
received three promotions. Originally hired as the Accounts Payable Clerk, he soon became Accounts Payable
Coordinator/Supervisor, and most recently was promoted to Accounts Payable Specialist. In a July 2004
interview with Empire College, Tony commented on his job and the training he received at Empire College.
I heard about this job through the Empire College Career Services Department and was hired as an Accounts
Payable Clerk. I am now in charge of all accounts payable processes for the company’s three divisions: United States,
Mexico, and International. There are 16 people in the Accounting Department. Another Empire College graduate,
Alisha Talamantes, was hired for my former position as Accounts Payable Clerk.
We use Excel and Oracle for managing our inventory worldwide, making sure coding is correct and payments are
made on time. Oracle is very different, but what I learned at Empire College was a good framework. I have figured
out ways to do things more efficiently.
My advice for Empire College students is to try to understand the theory behind what you are learning, not just
the practical application. Especially with software, you don’t want to just push buttons; you want to know why things work the
way they do. When you make mistakes or something goes wrong, that’s how you learn.
Semiannual Commencement Exercises will be held at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts on Wednesday
evening, January 26, 2005, for students completing their programs between August 1, 2004 and January 31,
2005, as well as medical students who will begin externships January 25, 2005.
Eligible graduates will receive information regarding the ceremony in early December. If you have questions
regarding the ceremony or your participation in it, please see Sherie Hurd, Jackie Sichel, Carl Oeschger, or Steve
Campbell.

Empire College Welcomes...
Leann Biancalana has joined Empire College’s Administrative Services Department as part of the team that greets
students, colleagues, and visitors each day, handles the College’s busy phone lines, and provides administrative support
to a number of departments. A 1998 graduate of Empire’s Specialized Associate Degree–Administrative Assistant
program, Leann worked as an office assistant for the School of Law while in school. Upon graduation, she obtained the
position of legal/administrative assistant with the Law Offices of William Fleckles in Novato, a position she held until Mr.
Fleckles’ retirement earlier this year.
Kaaron Carver is the newest faculty member of the Office Administration Department, teaching a variety of subjects
in Empire’s Evening Division. Kaaron has a broad background as an instructor, including: Windsor High School ROP
